Aughris head walk is a gorgeous 4.5km walk located between Sligo and Ballina, just 40 minutes from Tubbercurry. The walk takes in views of Benbulben, the Ox mountains and of course the wild Atlantic ocean and is ideal for casual strollers and experts alike.

A Wild Atlantic Way discovery point marks the start of this walk, just beside the Beach Bar. The Beach Bar’s adjoining car park has ample space to park while you amble across Aughris. Walk back up the road you just traversed and turn right for the pier. On a clear day you can see surfers riding the unbeatable Atlantic waves. At the top of the slip way, keep left and follow the pristinely kept trail. You will now be walking towards the sea, where you’ll be able to see Benbulben and Benwiskin looming in the distance.

Aughris sea cliffs measure 30metres in height, the highest in county Sligo. These high cliffs make an incredible viewing point for Sligo bay or even Raghly bay if the day is clear. As the walk continues, you will make your way to the cliff edge fort which is a wonderful place to take a break and soak up the unrivalled views. The location of this fort gives it a full 360 degree views of the rugged and unspoiled beauty of Aughris.

This walk is a delight for all your senses – listen to the sound of the crashing waves as you see Knocknarea tower ahead and smell the salty sea air. On your return journey you’ll see the incredible Ox Mountains in the distance and continue towards the Holy Well. This well, which is on working farmland, is said to always be surrounded by fresh blooming flowers. The fresh, natural spring adjacent to the well, even though fenced off, is yet another sign of the natural untouched beauty of south Sligo.

As you make your way back to where you began this walk, you can end your journey or continue to Dunmoran Strand. Taking you east over a quaint wooden bridge, this ramble will take you to an idyllic secluded beach surrounded by high dunes. A 2km walk in the direction you came will return you to your car at the Beach Bar.

This walk is not to be missed and is one of the most scenic in Sligo. Whether you are staying a while, or just passing through, this Sligo walk is a must do! When you’re finished pop by to us here in Cawleys for a spot of well-deserved food or spend the night in one of our beautiful rooms.
