Walking / Trekking – Lough Talt Area
R294 heading out from Tubbercurry on the Ballina Rd
There are two marked trail possibilities for short walks or combine the two sections to a figure of eight.
The first is a circular walk around the lake. The trail is a mixture of tarmac, stone and grass, and although not level all the way round is possible with buggies or (with a bit of effort) with a wheelchair. The start is at the south side of the lake where there is parking along side the road.
There are information tables at the start of the walk (clockwise) about flora and fauna in the area and further on a picnic spot. Follow the trail around to the small village of Lavagh on the north side of the lake: the church has a beautiful and unusual stained glass window. This is a lovely lakeside walk that is well marked.
The second section of the walk is a circular walk on a mixture of the road and through the semi-forested area above Gorterslin towards Mullany’s Cross. Allow a little bit more time than around the lake. Signs are visible for the start of the “Sligo Way” walk.

Ox Mountains
Slieve Gamph or the Ox Mountains run through the west of the county from Mayo through to Ballisodare Bay. They are mostly made up of limestone and gneiss, granite, and other metamorphic rock. The countryside is a mixture of upland bog, marshland, mixed forest and small plantations, with hill farming, mainly sheep farming in the upland area. The area also has its share of prehistoric sites, which indicate settlement of the area in prehistoric times and beyond.
The River Moy, one of the best-known salmon rivers in Ireland, has its source near Cloonacool (10 mins from Tubbercurry) and meanders through the landscape in its roundabout journey to the Atlantic Ocean at Killala Bay. The first three sections of the “Sligo Way” are based in the Ox Mountains. Visit South Sligo Walking Festival for details of walks in the area during the festival in May.
Sligo Way – 80km approx. length
This starts at Lough Talt at Lavagh (10 mins from Tubbercurry) and cuts through the county, eventually ending up at Dromahair, County Leitrim. It is a marked way that meets the Western Way at its starting point. The sections vary from 10-22 km. With two cars it is possible to do sections as day walks or half days as public transport is unsuitable. Ask for reception for details of pick off/collections by local tour operators. Picnic’s can be provided by our restaurant.

Free Diving Ireland – Try something different?
Various locations in Sligo. Contact Feargus for details on times/courses.
Freediving or apnea is the sport, science or art of holding your breath while being underwater. Many of us are familiar with snorkelling or scuba diving. Snorkelling is usually on the surface and freediving simply involves holding your breath, diving down and swimming around under water. It can be 1 metre deep or 50 metres deep and for a few brief seconds or minutes at a time. The recreational diver enjoys the liquid element and doesn’t worry how deep they are going or how long they are staying under. They simply enjoy the relaxed feeling, the sights and silence of being under water.
