Usually, large enough for one family and their cattle. They are now mostly covered with trees and scrubs and were used from Bronze Age until 1600s. In the lake at either end are two crannógs. At the top end of the lake is the Church of the Sacred Heart, which has a beautiful modern stained glass window. The church was original built by an English landlord for his tenants. Sections of the wall along the road were built at the time of the Great Famine.
